We figured a day trip to Muir Woods, Muir Beach and Mt. Tamalpais State Park Area would be the perfect opportunity to put the DAJO Trailmate lumbar pack to the test. The interior cargo space was more than enough for a few Odwalla bars, gummy bears, a fleece jacket and sunscreen. But even if the jacket hadn’t fit inside, the exterior cinch cords would’ve held the jacket in place and out of the way just fine.
The two included stainless steel bottles (750 ml/ea) were the perfect size allowing us to have more than enough water on hand for the day. The biner-clip caps even allowed us to hang one bottle when we slotted a Snapple juice bottle in there for a spell. My wife also wore the pack for part of the day and loved the fit. She says, it fit in the perfect spot, lower hip/back/bottom and it didn’t bounce—just stayed there and it never felt like the water bottles were in the way.
One thing we didn’t consider—on free National Park weekend, on a beautiful sunday morning just outside the Bay Area—the crowds were out in throngs and parking lots were full. We did a considerable amount of walking just to get up the highway shoulder below the entrance where we had to park, past the overflow parking lot to even get into the main entrance of Muir Woods. We both enjoyed the day in the park however, loved the Redwoods, the hiking and the perfect warm day with blue skies and no fog!
Though it suited the two of us well, my wife agrees that if we had the boys with us, we could’ve easily enough handled a few extra snacks, bars and even an epi-pen or two. The bottles are large enough for water to last several hours.
One thing I kept feeling was needed, was a way to keep the lids connected to the bottles when unscrewed. Maybe most water bottles don’t do that, but I felt like it would ensure that the two never become separated. If the lids were lost, the bottles wouldn’t function the same for obvious reasons. Another thing that I kept looking for was a sewn in loop on the waist band to stow away the excess strap for my 32″ waist. For somebody on the higher spectrum of waist size may not have the same issue. Regardless, a small loop to tuck away the excess strap would kept the 10″ excess strap on each side from hanging down the length of my shorts.
All in all however, this Trailmate lumbar pack from DAJO was a perfect addition to the trip and took care of all our hydration and day-hiking trip needs. Below are some of our photos from the trip. Branchwhipped.com has a new Trailmate (green color) from DAJO up for GIVEAWAY. Details for giveaway at bottom:
