Mountain Biking with a Chance of Snow

Last week I was exploring the nearby mountain bike trails and got snowed in. Well sort of. I was ascending a nearby canyon, for what was sure to be an epic downhill run, when I encountered a road block. The trail was impassible due to unmelted snow left over from Winter. There is still snow on all the peaks around here, as I type this I can see the west side of the mountain tops of Park City Mountain Resort, and Brighton Ski Resort and there is plenty of snow left up there. Enough snow in fact, that if you were ambitious you could be spring skiing down some of the north facing slopes. Actually, I just checked, Snowbird Ski Resort is still open for business and plans to be past Memorial Day!

Back to Mountain Biking. I climbed a few miles until I was well above the valley starting to enter a heavier wooded area. Things got cold in the shade and trees, but as it was all uphill I was generating enough body heat to stay warm, although the gloves were getting thinner by the minute. Here are some shots of the ride.

Accessed the trails with some fire roads.

Trees starting to get a little more dense.

View looking East from the trees about a mile in.

A little snow, quickly turned into a lot of snow as I entered the narrow canyons, and climbed higher.

End of the road for me here. In a few weeks this us sure to be a great, dry, trail. And a great option to enter some higher meadows for a camping bike trip I want to plan.

The north slopes were nearly all still covered in snow.

Nice Kickstand.

I wasn’t making it through this. I turned around at this point and enjoyed a nice, fast downhill ride back home. I always feel guilty enjoying a fast descent if I didn’t climb myself up there in the first place.
