Sanuk Sidewalk Surfers, Grifter: Go Anywhere ‘Sandal’ Review & Giveaway

Sanuk’s tagline is, “They’re Not Shoes, They‘re Sandals!” As I slipped on my first pair, to take them for a stroll down to the nearby river, I indeed felt that they were sandals, sandals that stayed on.
I’ve owned my fair share of sandals, so has
my wife, I love them, all kinds of flip flop and sandal styles, the one thing I don’t like about them is when you try to walk on any sort of an angle, it feels like you’re risking an ankle injury, or pressing your toes so hard to keep them to stay on your going to get a foot cramp for an hour. But, like I said I love flip flops and will continue to wear them any time I can get away with it, and avoid using them for rock scrambling. Now enters the Sanuks into my life, this
seems to have altered the equation a bit. Sanuks have the comfort of traditional flip flops, although much more durable, and they also stay on your feet like slip on shoes, perhaps better as the rear of the Sanuk is angles forward to keep your heel in place.
So who is Sanuk?
Sanuk has “been around since July, 1997 when Jeff Kelly started making sandals out of inner tubes and indoor-outdoor carpet.” Wow inner tubes and carpet, I’d like to see some of those first models. “Sanük” is the Thai word for FUN, our name is also our mantra. Sanuk’s goal is to provide creatively inspired yet thoughtfully designed products for the glo
bal outdoor community…mostly because we’re part of it. Headquartered in Southern California, Sanuk has strong ties to the ocean and the outdoors and has designed their footwear accordingly.
So how do Sanuks stack up for and extended period? I’ve worn mine as often as possible. I’ve worn them to work, to the park, river, trails, I’ve gotten them dirty and wet, but they have cleaned up nicely. I’ve read elsewhere online that if you have a f
oot odor issue you can toss these in the washer to get rid of any funk that might creep up. I however was blessed with the miracle of feet that don’t get smelly (and mostly not sweaty either). Maybe some genetic mutation has caused that, but foot odor or sweaty feet is not an issue for me while wearing my Sanuks, others I’ve spoken to aren’t as lucky. Their solution – toss them in the wash and viola, good as new.
My Sanuks are comfortable, they are as good as my flip flops, they stay on my feet when I am climbing over rocks and dirt hills and they look good doing it. I mean I could get away with wearing mine to church, okay that might be pushing it, but mine are all black perhaps no one would notice? The cushy sole not only provides a soft landing, but allows me to feel the terrain I am walking on, it helps with balance and also allows my feet to conform to the ground to a certain extent, this is not a bad thing.
I have a tendency to wear this kind of versitile footwear until my feet are nearly poking through the sole from so much use. I have no doubt that my Sanuks are going to be used up until they are nearly falling apart, I mean there is a certain pride in getting the maximum use out of some types of footwear, just check out Sanuk’s
